Holds and Recalls

A hold ensures that the person placing the request will be next in line to receive the desired library item whenever that item is returned. A recall, on the other hand, allows a person to request that a library item be returned from the patron who currently has it checked out sooner than its original due date.

To place a hold or recall request:

  1. Retrieve the catalog record of the item currently charged out.
  2. Click on the Requests button. If you have not logged in, you will be prompted for your Cornell ID number and last name.
  3. Using the pull down menu, choose a type of request (Hold, Recall, Book Delivery, or Library Annex request). Clicking the "OK" button will take you to the appropriate form.
  4. Enter your Cornell ID number and select a library location to pick up the item. For a hold or recall, please select the library that owns the book. There is a comments box if you wish to make additional comments.
  5. Indicate the length of time you wish the hold or recall request to be in effect. This is only necessary if it differs from the default of 30 days.
  6. Click the "Submit request" button to process the hold or recall request. When the current borrower returns the item, you will receive a notice indicating that the item is now available and where it will be held. These notices will be sent to your e-mail address. If you do not have an active e-mail address, all notices will be sent to your campus address.

NOTE:  The system will not allow you to place a hold or recall on any item you currently have charged out or have placed a hold or recall on already.
