Basic Search

Search By

Use

Title

  • To search for known titles (books, videos, databases, music, journal titles etc.) 
  • Note: While it is possible to search for journals with this option, searching by Journal Title provides a shorter Results List

Journal Title and Journal Title Abbreviation

  • To search for known journal, magazine, or newspaper titles
  • Note: You cannot search for journal articles by title in the CU Library Catalog.

Author

  • To browse for authors with similar names
  • To find all works by a particular author, editor or composer

Subject Heading

  • To browse for related subject headings
  • To find all works with a particular subject heading

Call Number

  • To browse for materials with similar call numbers
  • To find an item with a particular call number

Relevance Keyword

  • To search the catalog with an Internet-style search engine
  • To view search results listed by relevance, not alphabetically or by reverse chronology

Command Keyword

  • To search the catalog with quick, direct commands
  • To search in specific fields of a library record using field codes, e.g. KPUB (publisher) or KISN (international standard numbers like ISBN)

Guided Keyword Search

  • To construct complex searches with forms and menus
  • To combine search terms or phrases with selected Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)
  • To search for keywords in specific fields of a library record, e.g. publisher, ISBN number
