Search Tips for Find Articles

Cornell University Library's Find Articles feature provides access to a select group of Find Databases resources. To find additional article indexes, newspaper databases and other online resources, search the Library Gateway Find Databases feature or the CU Library Catalog.

For best results using Find Articles:
Netscape 6.2 and up or Internet Explorer 5 and up are recommended for Windows.
Netscape 6.2 and up, Mozilla 1.4, or Safari 1.0 are recommended for Mac (Internet Explorer not recommended for Mac).
JavaScript must be enabled in your browser.

How to Perform a Search:

1. Type in your keyword(s)
Enter a single term or phrase

An important note about searching in Find Articles:

If you type in more than one keyword for your search (e.g., west nile virus), the databases you have selected may search for these terms differently. Some will default to searching the terms as a phrase ("west nile virus"); some will process the search with an AND between each word (west AND nile AND virus); some will process the search with an OR between each (west OR nile OR virus). For more precise results, search the individual databases directly. For more information and assistance, Ask a Librarian.

2. Select Database(s):
Click on the checkbox next to the databases you would like to search. You may choose up to eight databases at one time and you may select databases from different subject areas.

3. View Results:
The first screen displays the number of results returned for each database selected. Click on the Merge/Show All Articles button to display a list of all results. Click on an individual hits link to display only the results from a particular database.

4. View Records:
View the full record for the article by clicking on the link in the results list.

5. Find It At Cornell
From the individual record, click the Find It At Cornell link to locate the article in the Cornell online and print collections or choose Search (Database Name) Directly to extend your search in a specific database.

System Messages:

"Search Failed"
This may mean that the selected database is currently down or that the Find Articles feature is temporarily unable to access the database. Go to the Find Databases page and enter the name of the database in the search window. In many cases, you will be able to search the database directly even if you can not connect through Find Articles. If you cannot connect to the database, please fill out a Problem Connecting form to notify library staff.

"No extended services are available for your citation information."
The Find Articles system is not able to do a book title search. This message may mean that the source of the article is a book instead of a journal. Go to the Library Catalog (under Research Tools on the Library Gateway) to search for the title of the book.
