How do I disable the proxy server on my computer?

Until July 2003, members of the Cornell community accessing e-resources from off campus needed to configure their Web browsers to use a proxy server.  Our current system does not require proxy server configuration, and it is recommended that you remove the proxy server settings that you made to your browser so as to avoid any problems.

Instructions for removing proxy settings depend on which Web browser and version you are using. To get version information, from within the browser go to the menu bar at the top of your browser and choose Help ~ About Internet Explorer or Help ~ About Netscape.

Mac users please note: the proxy server wasn't available for Mac and Internet Explorer 4.

Internet Explorer 5 and 6 (Windows):
Click on the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
Select Connections.
On the Connections page:
*** If you’re using a modem but NOT dialing into Cornell, click on the dial-up connection. (If you DO dial into Cornell then you didn't need to be using the proxy server.)
***If you’re using a cable service, such as RoadRunner, click on LAN Settings.
Remove the address listed under Use Automatic Configuration Script.
Uncheck Use Automatic Configuration Script.

Internet Explorer 4 (Windows):
Click on the View menu and select Internet Options.
Select Connection.
Under Automatic Configuration, click the Configure button.
Remove the URL.

Netscape 4, 6, and 7 (Windows and Mac):
Click on the Edit menu and select Preferences.
In the left side of the window, click on the symbol to the left of Advanced.
Click on Proxies.
Remove the URL under Automatic Proxy Configuration.
Select Direct Connection to the Internet.
