TN3270 and the Library Gateway

TN3270 helper applications, or TN3270 clients, allow you to connect to other computers over the Internet. When connected, your computer emulates an IBM 3270-style display terminal. TN3270 clients offer a simplified, non-graphical interface to resources. See below for recommended TN3270 clients.

The primary database accessed with a TN3270 client is the CU Library Catalog.  There are multiple ways to connect directly to the CU Library Catalog if you do not wish to access it via TN3270. It is essential to go through the configuration process below to use TN3270 with the Gateway.  If you run into problems or have questions, please use the Problem Connecting? form at the foot of this page.

Recommended TN3270 Clients

The following list of TN3270 clients are available to members of the Cornell community for free. These TN3270 clients are distributed with Bear Access and are recommended for use with the World Wide Web version of Gateway. If you use Bear Access, these programs may already be installed on your computer.

User support is available from the ATS HelpDesk and CU Library.

For Macintosh:
Comet (info from ATS)
The Macintosh TN3270 helper application is called "Comet-Brown". It is installed in the Comet folder of Bear Access.
For Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Windows 95:
If running Netscape 3.x and lower:
TN3270 (info from ATS)
In the TCP3270 directory is a program called "TN3270.exe."

If running Netscape 4.x:
If you are running Netscape 4.x, you must use a TN3270 "stub" program in addition to the TN3270 program described above.
For Linux:
If you are running Linux, you can use the TN3270 client that comes standard with that
operating system. It is called x3270 and is typically found in the X-Windows "bin"
directory.
For other versions of Unix:
Most versions of the Unix operating system do not include a TN3270 client as part of the
standard installation. There are, however, public domain versions of TN3270 clients
available on the Internet as source code. Contact us using the Problem Connecting? link at
the bottom of the page if you need help finding a TN3270 client.
