The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is an international not-for-profit consortium of colleges, universities and libraries that makes its resources available to scholars and researchers affiliated with CRL's member institutions. CRL is governed by the major research libraries of North America and is funded by fees, grants and contributions. Its outstanding collections include more than five million volumes of materials rarely held in North American libraries.
CRL fosters the collection and preservation of hard-to-find research materials in print, microform and electronic formats. It is best known for its holdings of global newspapers, international doctoral dissertations, scholarly journals, government documents, area studies materials, and a variety of subject collections.
Cornell University Library is a CRL member institution, which means that current students, faculty, and staff in the Cornell community are able to make an unlimited number of interlibrary loan requests, request any amount of CRL material, and use Center materials for as long as necessary.
You can search the CRL catalog to see if the Center owns items that the Cornell University Library does not. Be aware that some of CRL's collections are not yet cataloged online. Whether or not you locate a specific title in the CRL catalog, you should still submit an interlibrary loan request if you think it could be in one of CRL's collections. See the CRL Topic Guides for detailed information on the Center's collections and coverage of the CRL catalog and databases.
CRL has a very large collection of foreign dissertations, but most are not cataloged online. Some may be found in CRL's Dissertations Database. If CRL does not own a particular dissertation, it will purchase it at the request of a Cornell researcher. If already owned by CRL, the item will be available through interlibrary loan in less than two weeks; if CRL must purchase the dissertation, it may take 3 months to one year to arrive.
If you believe the material you need is available from CRL, click the Interlibrary Loan button at the top of the Cornell Library Catalog screen and proceed as you would with any other interlibrary loan transaction.
